Matthew Knies Trade Talk Is Back. Trading Knies Would Be A Major Mistake For Toronto!

Trade talk is back involving Toronto Maple Leafs power forward Matthew Knies. Trading Knies would be a major mistake by Toronto! Knies is about to turn just 24-years-old and he has three productive NHL seasons under his belt, including 58 points in 78 games in 2024-25 and an increase to 66 points in 79 games in 2025-26. Arrows are pointing upwards for Knies! 

Knies is signed to a team-friendly $7.75 million AAV contract that won't expire until after the 2030-31 season. Compare Knies' deal to the contract ask of Anaheim 22-year-old forward Cutter Gauthier and you see where the value is with the Knies contract. Gauthier just broke through in his second NHL season, with 69 points in 76 games (similar numbers as Knies), yet he's looking for a contract that is roughly double that of what Knies receives annually.
